Private. Files never leave your device.

Open a different file?

This closes the current PDF. It stays in your recent files with everything you've done, so you can come back to it from the home page.

Clear all files?

This empties the list and the order you put it in. Nothing is removed from your device.

Turn on airplane mode and give it a try. It still works.

How to add page numbers to a PDF online for free

A report, a scanned stack or a set of slides is easier to refer to once every page has a number. Open the PDF, tick "Add page numbers", and download. Each page gets a plain 1, 2, 3 at the bottom centre, counted in the order the pages appear in the file you download.

  1. 1Open your PDF. Click Choose file or drag and drop a PDF into the tool. You will see all of its pages as thumbnails.
  2. 2Tick "Add page numbers". The checkbox sits at the top of the side panel, above the page actions. It starts unticked, so nothing is stamped until you choose it.
  3. 3Download. Download the numbered PDF. It is built on your device while you work, so it is ready as soon as you are. The file is named after yours with _modified added (you can rename it), and your original is untouched.

Free for everyone

Number as many PDFs as you like, with no watermark and no daily cap. The same tool also removes, reorders and rotates pages, and the numbers are added after those changes, so they always follow the final order. That side of it is covered on the Organize PDF page.

It's open source under the MIT license, so anyone can read the code, fork it on GitHub, or share it. Simple PDF tools should be free for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Open the PDF, tick "Add page numbers" in the side panel, and download. Every page is stamped with its number, starting at 1 on the first page, and the result is a new file.

Where do the page numbers appear, and what do they look like?

Each number is printed at the bottom centre of its page, about 22 points (roughly a third of an inch) up from the bottom edge. It is a plain number in 12 point Helvetica, in dark grey.

What happens if I skip, remove or move pages as well?

The numbers are added last. A skipped page is left out of the download and is not counted, and a page you drag to a new place is numbered by where it lands, so the numbers always run 1, 2, 3 through the final file.

Does it change my original PDF?

No. You download a separate copy, named like yourfile_modified.pdf, and the file you opened stays as it was.

Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?

No. Nothing is uploaded. The numbering runs in your browser, on your device, and your file never leaves it. There is no processing server. For offline use, install PDkef and let its required assets load while connected.

Is there a file size limit?

There are no artificial file size limits. The only constraint is your device's available memory, since all processing runs locally in the browser.
